Swiftwick Athlete, Rob Hogan, Takes the Victory At Speed Golf World Championships

By: Hunter Hall

The Speed Golf World Championships were held October 26th & 27th at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, OR.

This event, an unique but growing niche in the running and golf world, combines two of Swiftwick’s favorite sports- distance running and golf.

Scoring is added up by combining golf scores and overall running time. For example, if you score of 80 golf strokes and complete the round in 50 minutes, your score would be 130.

For the first time ever, the field of 27 Pro Speed Golfers included two Olympic medalist distance runners, Nike athlete, Bernard Lagat of the USA, and Adidas athlete, Nick Willis of New Zealand.

Lagat,  the 2007 World Champion in both the 1500 and 5000 meters, is a new golfer who has recently found Speed Golf as a great way to relax and take the pressure off during the off season.

Nick Willis, the Olympic Silver medalist in the 1500 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is a 9 Handicap golfer and was considered a serious threat for a high finish at the 2013 Speed Golf World Championships.

On the other end of the spectrum, there were players who had great previous golf accomplishments, such as Eri Crum, who was a varsity player at Stanford and teammates with Tiger Woods, and Chris Walker, last year’s World Champion who was varsity team captain at Notre Dame.

The eventual winner of the event was Irishman Rob Hogan, who has perfected the art of playing a very solid round of golf in the most efficient manner possible. Rob, who has a personal best time of 31 minutes for a round of golf, and recently ran a 5 mile race in 30:12, has found a way to take very little time between shots, including carrying his bag while putting one handed.

As we see more and more athletes from both the running and golf world, we will see the level of competition jump way up in the next few years.

Swiftwick is excited to be involved in a sport that combines two of our favorite sports!

We cannot help but wonder what someone like Tiger Woods or even a super fit golfer such as Camilla Villegas would score. What do you think, #WickNation?
